    Overview

Finite element analysis is being used to determine the structural performance and of a fast steering mirror for Earth-based and space-based applications.

Project Description

Currently a finite element model to investigate the thermal and launch stresses on a fine-steering and alignment mirror is being constructed for Left Hand Design Corporation in Boulder, Colorado.   The fine steering mirror is a small mirror (varying sizes of approximately 1.5 - 5 cm diameter) with electromechanical actuators which can control the mirror at a bandwidth up to 4000 Hz.  This is useful for applications such as:
  • Image Motion Compensation
  • Earth observation from orbit
  • Instrumentation equipment
  • Infra-red inspection
  • Laser surgery

The design is likely to be used for applications such as the Space Interferometry Mission (figure 1) as well as other line-of-sight stabilization applications.  For more information about the functions, performance and applications of the Fast Steering Mirror, please see the product information from LHDC.

Unfortunately, screen shots of the finite element analysis are not available to the public because they contain proprietary information.  An example of COSMOS/M output is shown figure 2.  Please contact either Willard Simmons or Dale Lawrence if you have questions about this project.

The software being used is COSMOS/M from Structural Research and Analysis Corporation.
