RoboCar Autonomous Vehicle Project
August, 1997 Monthly Status Report
Progress Statement: The initial two meetings in August were used for organizational purposes. Additional meetings were held to recruit team members and to introduce the team to the rules of the 1998 Unmanned Ground Robotics Competition. RoboCar III, the University of Colorado's vehicle entry for the past two years was displayed and video of the 1997 competition was reviewed to introduce the new team members to the different types of vehicle designs that have previously entered. Based of the functional necessities of the vehicle for the competition the following primary design groupings have been established: Mobility, Navigation, and Guidance. Mobility design issues concern the vehicle chassis, motors, steering mechanisms, etc. Navigation is the process of representing the vehicle's external environment and determining the present location of the vehicle within the modeled world representation. Guidance is the process of commanding, or guiding, the vehicle to the desired destination.
